Welcome, chat and activities

Wednesday Warm Welcome is our weekly open house at Bearwood Baptist Church Hall: a hot meal, English conversation, benefits and housing advice, creative activities and – most of all – good company. As a Warm Welcome volunteer you help make the hall feel warm, safe and friendly for everyone who walks in, many of whom are lonely, new to the country or going through a hard time.

What the role involves

  • Set up and clear away – help lay out tables, chairs, tablecloths, the sign-in table and activity areas at the start, and pack away at the end.
  • Welcome people at the door – greet visitors, help them sign in, show newcomers where things are and introduce them to others.
  • Chat and listen – sit with visitors, especially anyone on their own; use the active-listening approach from your induction (pay attention, clarify, withhold judgement).
  • Support activities – join in and help run the creative, games or conversation activities the staff team has planned.
  • Signpost – if a visitor needs advice (benefits, housing, immigration, food), introduce them to Bashira, Sally, Lizzie or Tash rather than trying to advise yourself.
  • Serve teas and coffees – help with hot drinks and biscuits (this does not need kitchen training – food preparation and hot-meal service are separate roles).
  • Keep an eye out – notice anyone who seems unwell, distressed or unsafe and let a member of staff know quietly.

Checks before you start

  • Completed volunteer application form (contact details, postcode, emergency contact, privacy-notice confirmation).
  • Two references where possible – or an alternative character reference if you are new to the UK or returning after a break.
  • DBS check: not normally required for this role (no unsupervised contact with children or adults at risk).
