Wednesday Warm Welcome – Food Service Volunteer
Serving the hot meal and washing up (with an optional kitchen / food-preparation level)
A free hot meal is at the heart of Wednesday Warm Welcome. Food Service volunteers make sure everyone is fed safely and with dignity, and that the kitchen is left clean for the church. This role has two levels so that volunteers can help with food without necessarily completing full kitchen training.
Bearwood Baptist Church Hall · Wednesdays, 11.30am – 5.00pm (term time)
What the role involves
- Before service – put on an apron, gloves and hair covering; wash hands; help set out plates, cutlery and serving equipment.
- Serving (Levels A & B) – serve food to visitors at the hatch or tables, portion fairly, offer seconds when there is enough, and keep the serving area clean.
- Allergens – know where the allergen information for the day's meal is; if a visitor asks about ingredients and you are not sure, ask the cook or staff – never guess.
- Washing up and clearing (Levels A & B) – wash, dry and put away; wipe surfaces; bag rubbish and recycling; leave the kitchen as the church expects to find it. Once service has finished and no more food is being handled, aprons and hair coverings are optional for washing up.
- Food preparation (Level B only) – prepare and cook the meal under the direction of the cook or staff lead, following your Level 2 Food Hygiene training (temperatures, cross-contamination, labelling, storage).
- Stock and kit – tell staff when supplies (gloves, cloths, washing-up liquid) are running low.
Checks before you start
- Completed volunteer application form (contact details, postcode, emergency contact, privacy-notice confirmation).
- Two references where possible – or an alternative character reference if you are new to the UK or returning after a break.
- DBS check: not normally required for this role.
