Wednesday Warm Welcome – Children & After-School Play Volunteer

Play, craft and story activities for children who come with their families

Families with children come to Wednesday Warm Welcome, particularly after school. Play volunteers make the hall a welcoming place for children, so that parents and carers can eat, talk, get advice or join an activity knowing there is something fun and safe for their children to do – with the parent always close by and responsible.

Bearwood Baptist Church Hall · Wednesdays, 11.30am – 5.00pm (term time)

What the role involves

  • Set up the play area – lay out mats, toys, craft materials and books; check toys are clean and nothing is broken or a choking hazard for younger children.
  • Run simple activities – colouring, craft, story time, games – planned with the staff lead. Adapt to the ages who turn up.
  • Play alongside children, with parents present – encourage children to join in and get on with each other; keep the noise and running at a level that works for everyone in the hall.
  • Keep it safe – make sure the vestibule door is closed; watch for children heading for the kitchen, stairs or exits and alert the parent; report any worry about a child's wellbeing to a safeguarding lead (Lizzie or Sally) the same day.
  • Tidy up – pack away, wipe tables and toys, and note anything that needs replacing.

Checks before you start

  • Completed volunteer application form (contact details, postcode, emergency contact, privacy-notice confirmation).
  • Two references where possible – or an alternative character reference if you are new to the UK or returning after a break.
  • DBS check where the role is eligible – the Hub will confirm the level required for this role before you start.
